Promon consortium with Camargo Corrêa wins first-ever quality management certification for refinery construction in Brazil
Released: April 8, 2010

Awarded by Fundação Vanzolini, ISO/TS 29001:2008 certification proves compliance with specific standards for oil, gas and petrochemical industry

The CCPR Consortium, comprising Camargo Corrêa and Promon, has just been notified by Fundação Vanzolini that the consortium’s work on Petrobras’s Presidente Getúlio Vargas Refinery (Repar), located in Araucária, Paraná, will be recommended for certification against ISO/TS 29001. This quality management standard applies to companies in the petroleum, gas and petrochemical industry and is designed to guarantee safety, efficiency and quality in all the processes they use. The refinery project is the first to have won certification against this standard in Brazil.

Edilson Silva, CCPR’s quality manager, stresses that the entire process for demonstrating compliance with the requirements of the standard took only 60 days. This illustrates the two companies’ commitment and determination to obtain certification. “Without doubt this was a very bold initiative,” he says. “We had to address the challenge of proving that our processes were in accordance with the requirements of a standard that had never before been applied to a refinery. Today we can say that CCPR and its member companies are better prepared than ever to meet demand from the oil and gas industry.”

Mauro Pereira, Promon’s project director, explains that the certification audit conducted by Fundação Vanzolini noted opportunities for improvement on only two items in all the processes audited, a proportion considered insignificant by the certifier. “A strong commitment to quality and continuous process improvement have always been hallmarks of the projects implemented by Promon,” he says. “Because we had already all the processes required for ISO 9001 certification in place, the challenge was to make the necessary adaptations to the oil and gas industry, and this was done very successfully by the consortium team in a very short period.”
