International event encourages women to participate in the engineering industry
Released: March 2, 2010
Global Marathon for Women in Engineering takes place on March 10, sponsored in Brazil by DuPont, Promon Engenharia and CH2M Hill
On March 10 São Paulo hosts the Brazilian portion of the Global Marathon For, By & About Women in Engineering & Technology, created by the National Engineers Week Foundation. The Brazilian event is sponsored by DuPont, Promon Engenharia and CH2M Hill, with support from Grupo Foco, and focuses on the theme “Cultivating Tomorrow”. Its aim is to discuss career prospects in engineering and technology, and the role of women as professionals in the industry.
Demand for engineering and technology professionals will increase from now on in Brazil, owing to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, both of which will take place here. Another driver is rising investment in infrastructure under the government’s Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) and development of the vast oilfields discovered deep under the sea bed, in the pre-salt layer. In this context the Global Marathon is an excellent opportunity to offer knowledge to students who are unsure what career to choose, including information on the opportunities available in the sector.
Presentations will be delivered on Women and engineering: career opportunities and the new professional posture, by Eline Kullock, CEO of Grupo Foco; Challenges and opportunities at the start of your career, by Carulina Oliveira, coordinator of market development at DuPont; Engineering: perceptions and experience, by Maria de Fátima Pinto Antônio, Promon’s engineering manager; and Managing engineering projects from a woman’s perspective, by Liliam Valentin, project director at CH2M Hill.
The Global Marathon lasts 24 hours, with six global regions each having their own leaders and presenters, and scheduling following the sun in four-hour blocks. Events will take place concurrently in the U.S., U.K., China, India, Mexico, Lebanon and South Africa. In Brazil, the event takes place at 5-7 pm. The address is FEI, Campus Liberdade (Rua Tamandaré, 688, São Paulo). Anyone interested in participating can enroll until March 8 by sending an email to maratona.engenharia@gmail.com. More information is available on Facebook (Maratona de Engenharia) and Twitter (@maratonaglobal).
