Promon staffer chairs international organizing committee of 17th International Symposium on Alcohol Fuels
Release: 10/06/2008

Sustainable energy and energy security will be the focus for this edition of the long-running event, to be held in China. Lucas Ribeiro, an engineer with Promon Engenharia, chairs the international organizing committee

Lucas Ribeiro, an engineer who works for Promon Engenharia, is chairing the International Organizing Committee for the 17th International Symposium on Alcohol Fuels (ISAF), to be held on October 13-16, 2008, at Taiyuan in China’s Shanxi province. The purposes of ISAF are to look for sustainable fuels such as ethanol, methanol and biodiesel produced from different sources and by different technological routes, and to discuss the current stage of research, development and utilization.
Energy experts, scientists, and policy-makers from many countries will attend the 17th ISAF to exchange ideas on sustainable fuels. “My appointment to chair this important symposium reflects international recognition of Promon’s excellence in developing sustainable designs and solutions,” Ribeiro says. “It also evidences Promon’s commitment to encouraging and promoting a debate about energy sources that cause minimal damage to the environment.”
ISAF has been held regularly for 32 years and is the oldest continuously running series of alcohol fuels conferences in the world. Each edition of the biennial symposium takes place in a different country. The previous 16 editions convened in South Africa, Canada, Brazil (twice), the USA (three times), China, Japan, Thailand, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden (twice),and New Zealand. The 18th and 19th will be held in India and Italy.
The International Organizing Committee recommended Taiyuan as the venue for this edition in order to offer first-hand experience of Shanxi’s efforts in the area of sustainable fuels and implementation of China’s new environmental policy in the province. China wants ethanol to become a commodity and advocates using methanol from coal to minimize environmental impact. “Shanxi is a major coal-producing region, and the government is keen to foster the development of more sustainable technologies. Our increasingly globalized and multipolar world, with various countries playing key roles, affords ample scope for alcohol fuels to make an effective contribution to energy security and sustainability,” Ribeiro says.
It is important to note that ISAF, which comprises a multidisciplinary international group of professionals and academics, does not confine its discussions to ethanol from sugarcane and corn but also addresses the benefits of leading-edge technologies in areas neglected by the mass media, such as gasification and production of alcohol fuel from coal and cellulose, among many others. “This makes ISAF an incubator, with abundant opportunities to further knowledge of subjects that are often embryonic but have significant development potential,” Ribeiro says.

About the Promon Group – www.promon.com.br
Founded in 1960, Promon is a Brazilian group recognized for its engineering and project management expertise coupled with strong entrepreneurial capacity. Its core business is the design, integration and implementation of complete infrastructure solutions for key economic sectors such as power, oil & gas, process industries, chemicals, petrochemicals, mining, metallurgy, and information and communications technology.
The organization’s activities are conducted mainly by three companies: Promon Engenharia, a wholly-owned subsidiary; PromonLogicalis, formed by a merger between Promon Tecnologia and the Latin American operations of the Logicalis Group; and Trópico, a joint venture with CPqD and Cisco Systems. The group also includes Fundação Promon de Previdência Social, Instituto de Tecnologia Promon, and Instituto Razão Social, a nonprofit maintained in association with Instituto Camargo Corrêa and Gerdau.
Promon has been recognized as one of the best places to work in Brazil by all twelve editions of the annual “Guia Exame-Você S.A. – As 150 Melhores Empresas para Você Trabalhar” and all twelve editions of the survey “As 100 Melhores Empresas para Você Trabalhar” by the Great Place to Work Institute and Época magazine. It has also figured since 2000 in the Exame Sustainability Guide published by Exame magazine, and in 2007 won the National Quality Prize awarded by Fundação Nacional da Qualidade.
