Promon participates in expansion of Gerdau Açominas
- 11/08/2005

Promon is present in yet another important steel project, expansion of capacity from 3.0 million tons to 4.5 million tons at Gerdau Açominas, a steel mill belonging to the Gerdau Group located at Ouro Branco, Minas Gerais. Promon is responsible for power generation and blown-air system engineering, materials and ancillary equipment, and for supervising construction and assembly of the system.

Process gases generated by the facility’s coke plant, steel plant and blast furnace are used as boiler fuel to produce steam and drive a turbine. This reuse of process gas avoids release into the atmosphere and thereby reduces pollution, while at the same time generating extra power to enhance the mill’s environmental and energy balance.

Promon is participating in the project in association with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (air blower) and Siemens (generator and turbine). Both Mitsui and Siemens have partnered with Promon on other projects.

“This is another important initiative by Gerdau Açominas with our participation,” says Paulo Sobreira, Promon’s business director. “We worked with the company when it was state-owned and have won back its business now it’s in the private sector.”
