Promon participates in Rio Oil & Gas Show
- 10/31/2004

Promon Engenharia, which will exhibit at this year’s Rio Oil & Gas Expo and Conference, has operated in the oil & gas industry since the company was founded in 1960. Since then it has extended its capabilities to infrastructure solutions for key sectors such as electric power, mining, metallurgy, chemicals, petrochemicals, construction, telecommunications, and information technology, besides continuing to participate significantly in the oil & gas segment.

Today Promon’s operations in oil & gas encompass all segments of the industry, from production and transportation of crude oil and natural gas to refining and processing of petroleum products. Promon designs and implements oil & gas production units, storage terminals, refining and processing plants, pipelines, city gates, and thermal power plants. It also designs and implements voice and data transmission systems, and integrates enterprise applications for oil & gas companies.

The services provided by Promon range from consulting, feasibility studies and design to complete project implementation under turnkey or engineering, procurement & construction (EPC) contracts involving management, planning, engineering, procurement, construction, electromechanical assembly, commissioning and startup.

Activities in Oil & Gas

Upstream
Promon’s accomplishments in upstream projects include the Vermelho I, II & III and Albacora I offshore platforms in the Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro, and the Ubarana II platform in the Potiguar Basin, Rio Grande do Norte. Promon is currently implementing a 4.6 MW auxiliary power generating system for Petrobras’s P-33 platform under an EPC contract. The company is also responsible for management and execution of operational training programs for the Barracuda and Caratinga platforms supplied to Petrobras by Halliburton.

Downstream
Downstream projects delivered by Promon include turnkey implementation of MTBE (gasoline additive) units at the Replan, Reduc, Revap and Repar refineries, a natural gas processing plant for the Guamará Industrial Complex in Rio Grande do Norte, and a propylene separation unit at the Recap refinery for Polibrasil.

Currently, the Promon Skanska consortium is responsible for EPC implementation of a hydrogen generating unit at the Alberto Pasqualini Refinery (Refap) in Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, with completion scheduled for March 2005. The unit will have the capacity to produce 550,000 Nm3 of 99.99% pure hydrogen per day using natural gas reforming technology. The hydrogen will be used as feedstock for urban diesel, a new low-sulfur fuel for cars and light trucks.

Transportation
In the storage and transportation segment, Promon is currently working on EPC implementation of the TNC terminal (Terminal Norte Capixaba) and city gates for the Southeast network. The TNC terminal is part of a complex that also includes the Fazenda Alegre treatment plant and is one of Petrobras’s largest projects in Espírito Santo. The oil produced by onshore fields in the region is processed at the Fazenda Alegre plant to separate water and gas. It is then stored at the TNC in five tanks with an aggregate capacity for some 16,000 cubic meters, before being shipped by sea to Petrobras’s refineries.

In 2002, Promon began work on improvements to the Southeast pipeline network for Transpetro (Petrobras Transporte SA), involving modernization and revamping of 14 city gates at various locations in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The 14 city gates were mounted on skids in a factory at Itajubá, Minas Gerais, and transported to their respective sites for installation on civil foundations. This innovative approach was made possible by integrating 3D detail engineering software with Promon’s in-house applications for project management, procurement, planning and control, thanks not least to its experience with the methodology recommended by PMI (Project Management Institute). In toto these activities will significantly benefit the client by reducing lead time to delivery and saving a substantial amount on the overall cost of the project.

Thermal power plants
Promon participated intensely as an EPC contractor in the recent Brazilian program to implement new thermal power plants (TPPs) fueled by natural gas. Earlier (1995-7), it had worked on implementation of Replan’s 35 MW TPP and a 600 MW TPP for AES Uruguaiana, in consortium with MPE/EBE.

In 2003, in consortium with CNO (Construtora Norberto Odebrecht), Promon delivered the first 240 MW stage of the Três Lagoas TPP to Petrobras. Work scheduled for completion in 2004 includes the 780 MW Norte Fluminense TPP for EDF, implemented by Promon in consortium with Construtora Andrade Gutierrez and CNO, and the 520 MW Termopernambuco TPP for the Guaraniana group, implemented in consortium with CNO.

Corporate market
Besides its longstanding participation in the design and implementation of industrial projects, Promon offers the corporate market in general, and the oil & gas sector in particular, the benefit of more than three decades of experience in telecommunications, as well as its more recent but no less profound experience in information technology.

Its telecommunications offering currently encompasses technological consulting, project management, systems integration, and operation, support and maintenance services for fixed or mobile voice and data networks.

In information technology, Promon’s offering includes operation support systems for voice and data networks; systems modeling, architecture, development and integration; and document management and enterprise application integration solutions. Development of a trunk telecommunications system for Petrobras in the Campos Basin is a good example of Promon’s capabilities in this area.
